How to show up when patients ask ChatGPT for a medspa near them

New patients increasingly ask AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews where to go, and those tools cite clinics whose websites answer questions clearly. Here is what SEO, AEO, and GEO mean for a clinic, and the concrete changes that get you cited.

Five years ago a new patient typed "botox near me" into Google, scanned the map pack, and called the clinic with the most reviews. That still happens. But a growing share of patients now type a full question into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview: "Where should I get lip filler in Austin if I want natural results and online booking?" And they take the answer.

The clinics that appear in those answers get the patient. The clinics that don't are invisible in a way that no amount of paid ads fixes. Here's what determines who gets cited.

Three acronyms, one idea

  • SEO (search engine optimization) is the familiar one: ranking in Google's classic results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the source an AI assistant quotes when it answers a question directly.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization) is about how AI models describe your clinic when they generate a recommendation: whether they know your services, credentials, and reviews, and describe them accurately.

All three reward the same underlying thing: a website that states clear facts about your clinic in a form machines can read and trust. Most medspa websites are the opposite: beautiful, vague, and built from images.

What AI assistants actually look for

When an assistant answers "best lip filler in Austin," it pulls from pages it can parse and sources it considers reliable. Concretely, that means:

  1. A dedicated page per treatment and location. "Lip Filler in Austin" as its own page with a real URL, not a paragraph on the services page. Assistants cite pages, not paragraphs.
  2. Plain answers to the questions patients ask. How much does it cost? How long does it last? Who does the injecting? Is there downtime? Put each question as a heading with a two-sentence answer underneath.
  3. Structured data. Schema markup for your business (MedicalBusiness or LocalBusiness), your services, providers, hours, prices, and reviews. This is the machine-readable layer that lets an assistant say "lip filler from $650" with confidence.
  4. Consistent facts everywhere. Your name, address, phone, hours, and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, and social profiles. Inconsistency reads as unreliability.
  5. Fresh, real reviews. Review volume and recency matter to both Google and AI assistants. A clinic with 400 reviews and ten new ones this month outranks one with 900 reviews and none since last year.
  6. A fast, crawlable site. If your site is a single page of images with text baked into them, assistants can't read it. Real text, real headings, a sitemap.

A checklist for your current site

Open your website and check:

  • [ ] Is there a separate page for each of your top five treatments?
  • [ ] Does each page state a price or price range in plain text?
  • [ ] Does each page name the providers and their credentials?
  • [ ] Are your hours, address, and phone number in text (not an image) on every page?
  • [ ] Does the site have schema markup? (Paste a URL into Google's Rich Results Test to find out.)
  • [ ] Can a patient book from the page without calling?
  • [ ] Do you have a way to request reviews after every visit?

If you checked fewer than four, an AI assistant currently can't recommend you with confidence, and it probably isn't.

Two of the strongest signals are the hardest to fake: review velocity and online booking. Both are things a patient app produces as a side effect. Review requests go out after each visit through the app, so the stream of fresh reviews never stops. Booking is in the app, so "book online" on the service page is a real button with real availability.
